Making hidden art
Turks installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the myth of the artist and the authorship of a work, Turks engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp. In 1991, the Royal College of Art refused Turk a degree on the basis that his final show, Cave, consisted of a whitewashed studio space containing only a blue heritage plaque commemorating his presence Gavin Turk worked here 1989-91'Gavin will give a talk about his work on the first day, with particular emphasis on objet trouvé (the found object) and trompe loeil (painted sculpture).
The workshop will then be a place for students to investigate the hidden and non-visible art around them, assigning value and importance, belief and faith to objects that might otherwise be overlooked. Students will be asked to question what art is in relationship to its audience and who their audience is. They will be encouraged to go out into the city to research and gather material(s).
