The Cinematic Phoneme: On The Deferral of Capture

“If the commodity could speak it would say that its value is not inherent; it would say ultimately, that it cannot speak.”
(Fred Moten, In the Break: The Aesthetics of the Black Radical Tradition (2003))

What would become of the cinematic object – the object-of-cinema – had it not been constituted through the grammars of capture? Resonant, yet neither speakable nor audible, the ‘cinematic phoneme’ implies a fissure in what has become our conception of the visual; the visual, constituted through the gaze of a master; a subject. What if we arrive at cinema through the logics of sonority, pulsation, reverberation and resonance? Through the speech of its object? If we take capture as the avowed premise of the cinematic image, what visual culture would emerge from the deferral of the operations of capture?

Departing from Fred Moten’s In the Break, as well as from parts of Gayatri Spivak’s preface to Derrida’s Of Grammatology [1976 (1967)], this workshop will conduct a close reading of Spike Lee’s film, Bamboozled (2000), cutting through its polyphonic immersive textures, codes and modes of speech. The participants will collectively construct a performed reading of Lee’s methods of working throughout the three days.
